So, in case you missed it, Meghan Markle showed up at Wimbledon the other day to watch Serena Williams play. It was extremely low-key and yet somehow also the most dramatic thing ever? First of all, Meghan was called out for wearing jeans (legit...so ridiculous) and dubbed a “nightmare” by some petty tennis club official. But on top of that, she got a ton of backlash when her security guards started asking people not to take pictures of her.
One image in particular went viral, featuring a man named Hasan Hasanov seemingly all up in Meghan’s face with his iPhone.
But here’s the thing: If you zoom in on this picture, it’s clear Hasanov is taking a photo of himself, not Meghan.
“I honestly couldn’t really care less about taking a picture of Meghan, Harry, or any of the royals—and if I did, I’d ask first,” he told The Sun. “I was much more interested in getting a video of Roger Federer in action.”
Apparently, Hasanov was taking a selfie for his wife, and when security told him to “give them privacy,” he thought they were talking about the players. “It seemed crazy to me because all I did was take a selfie to send to my wife,” he said. “I was in the best seat I’d ever had in 15 years of queuing up for Wimbledon and wanted to show off because she didn’t get out of bed to join me.”
That said, he understands why Meghan’s team would misunderstand, and there are no hard feelings: “I know lots of people would like to get pictures of Meghan and I know people get cross when she gets upset because she’s a public figure. I won’t be getting cross about this because—to be honest—I had no idea what was going on until days later. And I’ll stay a fan of the royals.”
