A Friendly Reminder that These 45 Famous Actors Were In Your Fave Horror Movie *Classics*
If you need me, I'll be over here screaming at this 1989 photo of Brad Pitt.
Horror movies need not be scary. If you're an up-and-coming actor or actress, horror movies are your best friend. Just ask these now mega famous celebs, who had no problem making audiences jump in their seats. From battling crazed serial killers to getting hunted by sharks or giant spiders, these well-known stars show us that you have to commit, commit, commit!
Take Johnny Depp in A Nightmare on Elm Street or Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Biel in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, and even Paul Rudd in a Halloween movie – while these celebs have gone on to bigger and brighter things, many the scary movies they've starred in have gone on to become horror classics. And even though those horror villains send shivers down our spines, let's stop hiding under the covers and peep at some of their early A-list scream-work below.
Chris Hemsworth: The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Before the Aussie actor landed the role as the hunky Avenger, Thor, he played the role of a hunky jock... because is there really anything he can play that isn't hunky? In the horror/satire, a group of friends find themselves trapped in a remote cabin that happens to be controlled by evil curses and outside forces.
Ryan Reynolds: The Amityville Horror (2005)
The true story behind The Amityville Horror is absolutely terrifying. Twenty-eight days after the Lutz family moved into their new house, they were driven out by evil supernatural forces. Luckily, Ryan Reynolds (and his abs) made everything better.
Octavia Spencer: Halloween II (2009)
The Academy Award-winner faced some deadly tricks in Halloween II. Spencer's role as a nurse at Haddonfield Hospital lasted under 60-seconds. And seeing as how it was October 31st and Michael Myers was involved, you can probably guess what happened.
Jessica Biel: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
In an effort to shed her good-girl 7th Heaven image, Biel took a terrifying trip to Texas, where her character Erin was met face-to-face with a chainsaw-wielding maniac.
Matt Bomer: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)
We can all agree that Matt Bomer looks like a snack, but the Hewitts, a family of cannibals, took that statement literally and ran with it in the prequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. When Eric (Bomer) and his girlfriend Chrissie, played by Jordana Brewster, crash their car in the middle of nowhere, the chainsaw-happy Hewitts are hungry, er, happy to help.
Dan Levy: Cyberstalker (2012)
A few years before his breakout role in Schitt's Creek, Dan Levy and his famously bushy brows made their feature-film debut in the made-for-television chiller, Cyberstalker. The film centered on a woman (Mischa Barton) who is stalked by a mysterious threat–and while the plot synopsis sounds like a misadventure of Alexis Rose, the trailer clearly shows us that Levy's gun-wielding character is far from the David Rose we know and love.
Jared Leto: Urban Legend (1998)
What happens when a bunch of college students (including a pre-Joker Jared Leto) sit around and spew out their favorite urban legends? Naturally, a hooded killer comes around picking them off one-by-one in a similar fashion to the ill-fated tales.
Mandy Moore: 47 Meters Down (2017)
Before Moore landed This Is Us, she starred in the shark-thriller, 47 Meters Down. In the film, her character, Lisa, decides to go cage-diving in shark-infested waters with her sister, Claire. Things head south when the cage accidentally detaches from the rig, and they end up, yep, you guessed it, 47 Meters Down. Surrounded by a bunch of great whites, they must race to the surface before their air runs out. Yikes!
Patricia Arquette A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
Arquette may collect Oscars and Emmys for her roles in Boyhood and The Act, but she's no match for Freddy Krueger...who, um, decides to devour her like a worm. Nevermind.
Megan Fox: Jennifer's Body (2009)
The 2009 horror-comedy came shortly after Fox parted ways with the Transformers franchise. Here she plays a psycho-vampire cheerleader who starts eating boys at her school. And yes, it's as awesome as it sounds.
Jennifer Aniston: Leprechaun (1993)
Just before Friends, Jennifer starred in a horror movie about an angry leprechaun who just wanted to get his pot of gold back. Did you know that only a four-leaf clover can kill the title character, and did you know that this was Jennifer's film debut?
Jennifer Lawrence: House at the End of the Street (2012)
What’s scarier than the house at the end of the street? Living a few doors down from the house, apparently! JLaw plays Elissa, a 17-year-old who starts dating Ryan, a resident of said house and brother of a girl who disappeared after murdering their parents.
Renée Zellweger: Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1997)
Two years before Jerry Maguire, Renée had small roles in Reality Bites, Empire Records, and a starring role in Texas Chainsaw, playing a teenager on the run from Matthew McConaughey (see below). Like Renée at the time, the film remained mostly unknown.
Matthew McConaughey: Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1997)
If you’ve ever wanted to see the opposite of what Matthew is like in those Lincoln car commercials, watch this.
Katherine Heigl: Bride of Chucky (1998)
Have any of the Chucky films made sense? This fourth one certainly didn’t. But it stars Chucky, his bride doll Tiffany (the soul of Jennifer Tilly’s human character), and Tiffany’s neighbor Jade, played by Katherine Heigl. All you need to know is Jade is nothing like a bridesmaid or doctor.
George Clooney: Return to Horror High (1987)
Chances are, you’ve never seen this film. That, or you completely forgot that George was in it as Oliver, an actor playing a cop on the set of a scary movie, and that he was the first to die on screen. Side note: Doesn’t young George look scrumptious?
Leonardo DiCaprio: Critters 3 (1991)
Leo and his floppy hair made their film debut in the third installment of the sci-fi horror comedy franchise about furry little aliens (sorry, critters) who like to eat humans.
