Looks like there’s more to Tristan Thompson’s pre-breakup proposal to Khloé Kardashian than meets the eye. Khloé opened up about the proposal on The Kardashians, telling cameras that Tristan had popped the question shortly before news of his infidelity broke and that she’d turned him down.

“I said I need to make sure this is a totally different relationship because I want to be proud to say I am engaged to anyone,” Khloé said. “That is why I said, ‘I am not comfortable accepting this because I am not excited to tell my family.’ And as hurtful as it was for him to hear, it was the truth. I would never accept something and give someone false hope.”

However, People reports that Khloé eventually said yes and was secretly engaged to Tristan for a full nine months. According to a source who spoke to the outlet, Tristan’s initial proposal took place in December 2019. He then proposed again in February 2021, and Khloé said yes.

Kim referenced Khloé’s first proposal during The Kardashians, saying, “I will never forget Tristan calling me and he was going to propose to her on Valentine’s Day. Which was about a year since they had drama. So this is, like, last Valentine’s Day. And then I called him the day after and said, ‘I never heard anything from Khloé. Did you propose?’ And he was like, ‘Oh yeah, I did in December.’ She didn’t tell us.”

After reportedly accepting Tristan’s February 2021 proposal, Khloé called off the engagement in December—amid news that Tristan had cheated on her and fathered another child. She and Tristan have since welcomed their second child via surrogate (he was conceived before news of Tristan’s scandal broke), and Khloé told Kardashians cameras that his birth has helped her “start the healing process.”
