Two women have been charged after five toddlers were injured at Chicago’s Logan Square Daycare on December 1, ABC 7 reports. Lizandra Cosme, 32, has been charged with five counts of aggravated battery of a child under 13 years old and causing great bodily harm. Susana Gonzalez, 27, was charged with five misdemeanor counts of causing the circumstances of child endangerment.
According to KMBC, Cosme brought a hot glue gun to the daycare to work on a Christmas project. When one parent noticed burn marks on her child’s hands, she contacted the daycare, which reviewed surveillance video. This allegedly showed Cosme shooting the hot glue gun directly onto the hands and arms of five two- and three-year-olds. On the same tape, Gonzalez can reportedly be seen laughing as Cosme acted.
Logan Square spokeswoman Lissa Druss Christman issued a statement saying they’d contacted the Department of Children and Family Services upon reviewing the tapes and fired Cosme and Gonzalez immediately.
ABC 7 also reported Cosme allegedly tried to later pin the burns on the children’s parents, even asking one father if his child had been injured at home. Her attorney says she did not act out of malice, but that she did “[screw] up.”
